The Word, Made Clear

A closer reading of Matthew, from promise to resurrection

Follow all 28 chapters of Matthew in contemporary American English, from Jesus’ genealogy and birth to His teaching, miracles, death, resurrection, and final commission to His disciples. This volume presents Jesus as the promised Messiah and King while inviting readers to examine the biblical text carefully for themselves.

The paraphrase is accompanied by commentary, Text and Translation Notes, and theological discussion. These sections explore historical and cultural context, important Greek words, translation choices, and questions raised by the passages. The opening material introduces Matthew’s setting and purpose and explains the author’s approach, source policy, and statement of faith.

For readers who want to look beneath the English wording, the book includes the complete public-domain Byzantine Greek text of Matthew with line-by-line transliteration into Roman letters, an explanation of the Byzantine textual tradition, and guidance on using transliteration. Written by James Childers as a companion for study and reflection, it is intended to be read alongside a trusted Bible translation, not as a replacement for Scripture.
