There was a certain man in Cæsarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
Ἀνὴρ δέ τις ἦν ἐν Καισαρείᾳ ὀνόματι Κορνήλιος, ἑκατοντάρχης ἐκ σπείρης τῆς καλουμένης Ἰταλικῆς,
Anēr de tis ēn en Kaisareia onomati Kornēlios, hekatontarchēs ek speirēs tēs kaloumenēs Italikēs,
He was devoted to God, and his whole household shared his reverence for God. He gave generously to help the people in need and prayed to God regularly.
A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
εὐσεβὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν σὺν παντὶ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ, ποιῶν τε ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς τῷ λαῷ, καὶ δεόμενος τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ παντός.
eusebēs kai phoboumenos ton theon syn panti tō oikō autou, poiōn te eleēmosynas pollas tō laō, kai deomenos tou theou dia pantos.
At about three in the afternoon, he had a vision in which he clearly saw an angel from God come to him and call, “Cornelius!”
He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
Εἶδεν ἐν ὁράματι φανερῶς, ὡσεὶ ὥραν ἐνάτην τῆς ἡμέρας, ἄγγελον τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσελθόντα πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ εἰπόντα αὐτῷ, Κορνήλιε.
Eiden en horamati phanerōs, hōsei hōran enatēn tēs hēmeras, angelon tou theou eiselthonta pros auton, kai eiponta autō, Kornēlie.
Cornelius stared at him, frightened. “What is it, sir?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and your gifts to those in need have come before God, and He has remembered them.
And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
Ὁ δὲ ἀτενίσας αὐτῷ καὶ ἔμφοβος γενόμενος εἶπεν, Τί ἐστιν, κύριε; Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ, Αἱ προσευχαί σου καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἀνέβησαν εἰς μνημόσυνον ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ.

“Now send men to Joppa to ask Simon, also known as Peter, to come here.
And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
Καὶ νῦν πέμψον εἰς Ἰόππην ἄνδρας, καὶ μετάπεμψαι Σίμωνα τὸν ἐπικαλούμενον Πέτρον∙
Kai nyn pempson eis Ioppēn andras, kai metapempsai Simōna ton epikaloumenon Petron;
“He is staying with another Simon, a man who works with leather. His house is beside the sea.”
He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.
οὗτος ξενίζεται παρά τινι Σίμωνι βυρσεῖ, ᾧ ἐστιν οἰκία παρὰ θάλασσαν.
houtos xenizetai para tini Simōni byrsei, hō estin oikia para thalassan.
After the angel who had spoken to Cornelius left, Cornelius called two household servants and a soldier devoted to God who was one of his personal attendants.
And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;
Ὡς δὲ ἀπῆλθεν ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν τῷ Κορνηλίῳ, φωνήσας δύο τῶν οἰκετῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ στρατιώτην εὐσεβῆ τῶν προσκαρτερούντων αὐτῷ,
Hōs de apēlthen ho angelos ho lalōn tō Kornēliō, phōnēsas dyo tōn oiketōn autou, kai stratiōtēn eusebē tōn proskarterountōn autō,
He explained the whole matter to them and sent them to Joppa.
And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.
καὶ ἐξηγησάμενος αὐτοῖς ἅπαντα, ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν Ἰόππην.
kai exēgēsamenos autois hapanta, apesteilen autous eis tēn Ioppēn.
The following day, while the men were still traveling and drawing near the city, Peter climbed onto the roof to pray. It was about noon.
¶ On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον, ὁδοιπορούντων ἐκείνων καὶ τῇ πόλει ἐγγιζόντων, ἀνέβη Πέτρος ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα προσεύξασθαι, περὶ ὥραν ἕκτην∙
Tē de epaurion, hodoiporountōn ekeinōn kai tē polei engizontōn, anebē Petros epi to dōma proseuxasthai, peri hōran hektēn;
He grew hungry and wanted a meal. While the food was being prepared, he entered a trance.
And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
ἐγένετο δὲ πρόσπεινος, καὶ ἤθελεν γεύσασθαι∙ παρασκευαζόντων δὲ ἐκείνων, ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἔκστασις,
egeneto de prospeinos, kai ēthelen geusasthai; paraskeuazontōn de ekeinōn, epepesen ep’ auton ekstasis,
He saw heaven standing open and something coming down toward him that looked like a huge sheet, tied at its four corners and being lowered to the ground.
And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγμένον, καὶ καταβαῖνον ἐπ’ αὐτὸν σκεῦός τι ὡς ὀθόνην μεγάλην, τέσσαρσιν ἀρχαῖς δεδεμένον, καὶ καθιέμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς∙
kai theōrei ton ouranon aneōgmenon, kai katabainon ep’ auton skeuos ti hōs othonēn megalēn, tessarsin archais dedemenon, kai kathiemenon epi tēs gēs;
Inside were all kinds of four-footed creatures, wild animals, crawling creatures, and birds.
Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
ἐν ᾧ ὑπῆρχεν πάντα τὰ τετράποδα τῆς γῆς καὶ τὰ θηρία καὶ τὰ ἑρπετὰ καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.
en hō hypērchen panta ta tetrapoda tēs gēs kai ta thēria kai ta herpeta kai ta peteina tou ouranou.
A voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill something and eat.”
And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
Καὶ ἐγένετο φωνὴ πρὸς αὐτόν, Ἀναστάς, Πέτρε, θῦσον καὶ φάγε.
Kai egeneto phōnē pros auton, Anastas, Petre, thyson kai phage.
“Certainly not, Lord!” Peter answered. “I have never eaten anything considered defiled or ceremonially unclean.”
But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
Ὁ δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν, Μηδαμῶς, κύριε∙ ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἔφαγον πᾶν κοινὸν ἢ ἀκάθαρτον.
Ho de Petros eipen, Mēdamōs, kyrie; hoti oudepote ephagon pan koinon ē akatharton.
The voice spoke to him a second time: “Do not treat as defiled what God has made clean.”
And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
Καὶ φωνὴ πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου πρὸς αὐτόν, Ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν, σὺ μὴ κοίνου.
Kai phōnē palin ek deuterou pros auton, Ha ho theos ekatharisen, sy mē koinou.
This happened three times. Then the sheet was taken back into heaven.
This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
Τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ τρίς∙ καὶ πάλιν ἀνελήφθη τὸ σκεῦος εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν.
Touto de egeneto epi tris; kai palin anelēphthē to skeuos eis ton ouranon.
Peter was still puzzling over the meaning of the vision when the men Cornelius had sent arrived at the gate. They had been asking where to find Simon’s house.
Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate,
Ὡς δὲ ἐν ἑαυτῷ διηπόρει ὁ Πέτρος τί ἂν εἴη τὸ ὅραμα ὃ εἶδεν, καὶ ἰδού, οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι ἀπὸ τοῦ Κορνηλίου, διερωτήσαντες τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος, ἐπέστησαν ἐπὶ τὸν πυλῶνα,
Hōs de en heautō diēporei ho Petros ti an eiē to horama ho eiden, kai idou, hoi andres hoi apestalmenoi apo tou Kornēliou, dierōtēsantes tēn oikian Simōnos, epestēsan epi ton pylōna,
They called out, asking whether Simon, the one also called Peter, was staying there.
And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
καὶ φωνήσαντες ἐπυνθάνοντο εἰ Σίμων, ὁ ἐπικαλούμενος Πέτρος, ἐνθάδε ξενίζεται.
kai phōnēsantes epynthanonto ei Simōn, ho epikaloumenos Petros, enthade xenizetai.
While Peter was thinking about the vision, the Spirit told him, “There are men looking for you.
¶ While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
Τοῦ δὲ Πέτρου διενθυμουμένου περὶ τοῦ ὁράματος, εἶπεν αὐτῷ τὸ πνεῦμα, Ἰδού, ἄνδρες ζητοῦσίν σε.
Tou de Petrou dienthymoumenou peri tou horamatos, eipen autō to pneuma, Idou, andres zētousin se.
“Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation. I am the One who sent them.”
Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
Ἀλλὰ ἀναστὰς κατάβηθι, καὶ πορεύου σὺν αὐτοῖς, μηδὲν διακρινόμενος∙ διότι ἐγὼ ἀπέσταλκα αὐτούς.
Alla anastas katabēthi, kai poreuou syn autois, mēden diakrinomenos; dioti egō apestalka autous.
Peter went down to the men. “I’m the man you’re looking for,” he said. “What brings you here?”
Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
Καταβὰς δὲ Πέτρος πρὸς τοὺς ἄνδρας εἶπεν, Ἰδού, ἐγώ εἰμι ὃν ζητεῖτε∙ τίς ἡ αἰτία δι’ ἣν πάρεστε;
Katabas de Petros pros tous andras eipen, Idou, egō eimi hon zēteite; tis hē aitia di’ hēn pareste?
They answered, “Cornelius, a Roman officer, is an upright man who reveres God and is highly regarded among the Jewish people. A holy angel instructed him to invite you to his home so that he could hear what you have to say.”
And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
Οἱ δὲ εἶπον, Κορνήλιος ἑκατοντάρχης, ἀνὴρ δίκαιος καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεόν, μαρτυρούμενός τε ὑπὸ ὅλου τοῦ ἔθνους τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἐχρηματίσθη ὑπὸ ἀγγέλου ἁγίου μεταπέμψασθαί σε εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ῥήματα παρὰ σοῦ.
Hoi de eipon, Kornēlios hekatontarchēs, anēr dikaios kai phoboumenos ton theon, martyroumenos te hypo holou tou ethnous tōn Ioudaiōn, echrēmatisthē hypo angelou hagiou metapempsasthai se eis ton oikon autou, kai akousai rhēmata para sou.
Peter invited the men inside and gave them a place to stay. The next day he went with them, accompanied by some of the believers from Joppa.
Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
Εἰσκαλεσάμενος οὖν αὐτοὺς ἐξένισεν. Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ὁ Πέτρος ἐξῆλθεν σὺν αὐτοῖς, καί τινες τῶν ἀδελφῶν τῶν ἀπὸ Ἰόππης συνῆλθον αὐτῷ.
Eiskalesamenos oun autous exenisen. Tē de epaurion ho Petros exēlthen syn autois, kai tines tōn adelphōn tōn apo Ioppēs synēlthon autō.
The next day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them and had gathered his relatives and close friends.
And the morrow after they entered into Cæsarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
Καὶ τῇ ἐπαύριον εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν Καισάρειαν. Ὁ δὲ Κορνήλιος ἦν προσδοκῶν αὐτούς, συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς συγγενεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἀναγκαίους φίλους.
Kai tē epaurion eisēlthon eis tēn Kaisareian. Ho de Kornēlios ēn prosdokōn autous, synkalesamenos tous syngeneis autou kai tous anankaious philous.
As Peter came in, Cornelius met him, dropped at his feet, and bowed in worship.
And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
Ὡς δὲ ἐγένετο τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν τὸν Πέτρον, συναντήσας αὐτῷ ὁ Κορνήλιος, πεσὼν ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας, προσεκύνησεν.
Hōs de egeneto tou eiselthein ton Petron, synantēsas autō ho Kornēlios, pesōn epi tous podas, prosekynēsen.
Peter helped him up. “Get up,” he said. “I am human, just as you are.”
But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
Ὁ δὲ Πέτρος αὐτὸν ἤγειρεν λέγων, Ἀνάστηθι∙ κἀγὼ αὐτὸς ἄνθρωπός εἰμι.
Ho de Petros auton ēgeiren legōn, Anastēthi; kagō autos anthrōpos eimi.
Talking with Cornelius, Peter went inside and found a large gathering waiting there.
And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
Καὶ συνομιλῶν αὐτῷ εἰσῆλθεν, καὶ εὑρίσκει συνεληλυθότας πολλούς,
Kai synomilōn autō eisēlthen, kai heuriskei synelēlythotas pollous,
He told them, “You know that a Jewish man is not permitted to associate with someone from another nation or visit his home. But God has shown me that I must not regard any person as defiled or unclean.
And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
ἔφη τε πρὸς αὐτούς, Ὑμεῖς ἐπίστασθε ὡς ἀθέμιτόν ἐστιν ἀνδρὶ Ἰουδαίῳ κολλᾶσθαι ἢ προσέρχεσθαι ἀλλοφύλῳ∙ καὶ ἐμοὶ ὁ θεὸς ἔδειξεν μηδένα κοινὸν ἢ ἀκάθαρτον λέγειν ἄνθρωπον∙
ephē te pros autous, Hymeis epistasthe hōs athemiton estin andri Ioudaiō kollasthai ē proserchesthai allophylō; kai emoi ho theos edeixen mēdena koinon ē akatharton legein anthrōpon;
“So when you sent for me, I came without objecting. Now tell me why you asked me to come.”
Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?
διὸ καὶ ἀναντιρρήτως ἦλθον μεταπεμφθείς. Πυνθάνομαι οὖν, τίνι λόγῳ μετεπέμψασθέ με.
dio kai anantirrētōs ēlthon metapemphtheis. Pynthanomai oun, tini logō metepempsasthe me.
Cornelius answered, “Four days ago, I was fasting until this hour. At about three in the afternoon I was praying at home, when suddenly a man in shining clothes stood in front of me.
And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
Καὶ ὁ Κορνήλιος ἔφη, Ἀπὸ τετάρτης ἡμέρας μέχρι ταύτης τῆς ὥρας ἤμην νηστεύων, καὶ τὴν ἐνάτην ὥραν προσευχόμενος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ μου∙ καὶ ἰδού, ἀνὴρ ἔστη ἐνώπιόν μου ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ,
Kai ho Kornēlios ephē, Apo tetartēs hēmeras mechri tautēs tēs hōras ēmēn nēsteuōn, kai tēn enatēn hōran proseuchomenos en tō oikō mou; kai idou, anēr estē enōpion mou en esthēti lampra,
“He said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to those in need.
And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.
καί φησιν, Κορνήλιε, εἰσηκούσθη σου ἡ προσευχή, καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἐμνήσθησαν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ.
kai phēsin, Kornēlie, eisēkousthē sou hē proseuchē, kai hai eleēmosynai sou emnēsthēsan enōpion tou theou.
“‘Send to Joppa for Simon, also known as Peter. He is staying by the sea in the home of Simon, the leather worker. When he comes, he will speak to you.’
Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
Πέμψον οὖν εἰς Ἰόππην, καὶ μετακάλεσαι Σίμωνα ὃς ἐπικαλεῖται Πέτρος∙ οὗτος ξενίζεται ἐν οἰκίᾳ Σίμωνος βυρσέως παρὰ θάλασσαν∙ ὃς παραγενόμενος λαλήσει σοι.
Pempson oun eis Ioppēn, kai metakalesai Simōna hos epikaleitai Petros; houtos xenizetai en oikia Simōnos byrseōs para thalassan; hos paragenomenos lalēsei soi.
“So I sent for you right away. It was kind of you to come. Now we are all here before God, ready to hear everything God has instructed you to tell us.”
Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.
Ἐξαυτῆς οὖν ἔπεμψα πρός σε∙ σύ τε καλῶς ἐποίησας παραγενόμενος. Νῦν οὖν πάντες ἡμεῖς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ πάρεσμεν ἀκοῦσαι πάντα τὰ προστεταγμένα σοι ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ.
Exautēs oun epempsa pros se; sy te kalōs epoiēsas paragenomenos. Nyn oun pantes hēmeis enōpion tou theou paresmen akousai panta ta prostetagmena soi hypo tou theou.
Peter began to speak. “Now I truly see that God does not favor one people over another.
¶ Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
Ἀνοίξας δὲ Πέτρος τὸ στόμα εἶπεν, Ἐπ’ ἀληθείας καταλαμβάνομαι ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν προσωπολήπτης ὁ θεός∙
Anoixas de Petros to stoma eipen, Ep’ alētheias katalambanomai hoti ouk estin prosōpolēptēs ho theos;
“In every nation, the person who reveres Him and practices what is right is welcome to Him.
But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
ἀλλ’ ἐν παντὶ ἔθνει ὁ φοβούμενος αὐτὸν καὶ ἐργαζόμενος δικαιοσύνην, δεκτὸς αὐτῷ ἐστιν.
all’ en panti ethnei ho phoboumenos auton kai ergazomenos dikaiosynēn, dektos autō estin.
“He sent His message to the people of Israel, announcing peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord over everyone.
The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
Τὸν λόγον ὃν ἀπέστειλεν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, εὐαγγελιζόμενος εἰρήνην διὰ Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ—οὗτός ἐστιν πάντων κύριος—
Ton logon hon apesteilen tois huiois Israēl, euangelizomenos eirēnēn dia Iēsou christou—houtos estin pantōn kyrios—
“You know about the events that spread through Judea, beginning in Galilee after John proclaimed baptism.
That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judæa, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
ὑμεῖς οἴδατε, τὸ γενόμενον ῥῆμα καθ’ ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας, ἀρξάμενον ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, μετὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐκήρυξεν Ἰωάννης∙
hymeis oidate, to genomenon rhēma kath’ holēs tēs Ioudaias, arxamenon apo tēs Galilaias, meta to baptisma ho ekēryxen Iōannēs;
“You know how God anointed Jesus from Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. Jesus traveled from place to place, doing good and healing everyone held under the devil’s oppression, because God was with Him.
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
Ἰησοῦν τὸν ἀπὸ Ναζαρέτ, ὡς ἔχρισεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεὸς πνεύματι ἁγίῳ καὶ δυνάμει, ὃς διῆλθεν εὐεργετῶν καὶ ἰώμενος πάντας τοὺς καταδυναστευομένους ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἦν μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
Iēsoun ton apo Nazaret, hōs echrisen auton ho theos pneumati hagiō kai dynamei, hos diēlthen euergetōn kai iōmenos pantas tous katadynasteuomenous hypo tou diabolou, hoti ho theos ēn met’ autou.
“We witnessed everything He did in the Jewish countryside and in Jerusalem. They killed Him by hanging Him on the wood of a cross.
And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
Καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐσμεν μάρτυρες πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν ἔν τε τῇ χώρᾳ τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ∙ ὃν καὶ ἀνεῖλον κρεμάσαντες ἐπὶ ξύλου.
Kai hēmeis esmen martyres pantōn hōn epoiēsen en te tē chōra tōn Ioudaiōn kai en Hierousalēm; hon kai aneilon kremasantes epi xylou.
“But on the third day God brought Him back from the dead and allowed Him to be seen.
Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
Τοῦτον ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸν ἐμφανῆ γενέσθαι,
Touton ho theos ēgeiren tē tritē hēmera, kai edōken auton emphanē genesthai,
“He appeared to witnesses God had chosen beforehand, rather than to the entire population. We were those witnesses, and we ate and drank with Him after He had risen from death.
Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
οὐ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, ἀλλὰ μάρτυσιν τοῖς προκεχειροτονημένοις ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ, ἡμῖν, οἵτινες συνεφάγομεν καὶ συνεπίομεν αὐτῷ μετὰ τὸ ἀναστῆναι αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν.
ou panti tō laō, alla martysin tois prokecheirotonēmenois hypo tou theou, hēmin, hoitines synephagomen kai synepiomen autō meta to anastēnai auton ek nekrōn.
“He instructed us to proclaim the message to the people and solemnly testify that God has appointed Him to judge both those living and those who have died.
And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
Καὶ παρήγγειλεν ἡμῖν κηρύξαι τῷ λαῷ, καὶ διαμαρτύρασθαι ὅτι αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ ὡρισμένος ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ κριτὴς ζώντων καὶ νεκρῶν.
Kai parēngeilen hēmin kēryxai tō laō, kai diamartyrasthai hoti autos estin ho hōrismenos hypo tou theou kritēs zōntōn kai nekrōn.
“All the prophets testify about Him: through His name, everyone who puts their faith in Him receives forgiveness for their sins.”
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Τούτῳ πάντες οἱ προφῆται μαρτυροῦσιν, ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν λαβεῖν διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ πάντα τὸν πιστεύοντα εἰς αὐτόν.
Toutō pantes hoi prophētai martyrousin, aphesin hamartiōn labein dia tou onomatos autou panta ton pisteuonta eis auton.
Before Peter had finished speaking, the Holy Spirit came upon everyone listening to the message.
¶ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
Ἔτι λαλοῦντος τοῦ Πέτρου τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα, ἐπέπεσεν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας τὸν λόγον.
Eti lalountos tou Petrou ta rhēmata tauta, epepesen to pneuma to hagion epi pantas tous akouontas ton logon.
The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astonished. God had poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit on Gentiles too!
And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Καὶ ἐξέστησαν οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς πιστοί, ὅσοι συνῆλθον τῷ Πέτρῳ, ὅτι καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη ἡ δωρεὰ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐκκέχυται.
Kai exestēsan hoi ek peritomēs pistoi, hosoi synēlthon tō Petrō, hoti kai epi ta ethnē hē dōrea tou hagiou pneumatos ekkechytai.
They could hear them speaking in tongues and praising God’s greatness. Then Peter spoke up:
For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Ἤκουον γὰρ αὐτῶν λαλούντων γλώσσαις, καὶ μεγαλυνόντων τὸν θεόν. Τότε ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πέτρος,
Ēkouon gar autōn lalountōn glōssais, kai megalynontōn ton theon. Tote apekrithē ho Petros,
“These people have received the Holy Spirit just as we did. Who could deny them the water to be baptized?”
Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
Μήτι τὸ ὕδωρ κωλῦσαι δύναταί τις, τοῦ μὴ βαπτισθῆναι τούτους, οἵτινες τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἔλαβον καθὼς καὶ ἡμεῖς;
Mēti to hydōr kōlysai dynatai tis, tou mē baptisthēnai toutous, hoitines to pneuma to hagion elabon kathōs kai hēmeis?
He directed that they be baptized in the Lord’s name. Afterward, they asked him to stay with them for a few days.
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Προσέταξέν τε αὐτοὺς βαπτισθῆναι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου. Τότε ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας τινάς.
Prosetaxen te autous baptisthēnai en tō onomati tou kyriou. Tote ērōtēsan auton epimeinai hēmeras tinas.
