You do not need to read Greek to begin. Tap an underlined word in either the Greek line or the Romanized Greek line: both open the same entry. Where reliable data is available, you will see the dictionary form, grammar, Strong’s number and a definition. Choose “More meaning and grammar” to explore further, then “Close” to return to the passage. Drag the top bar to move the panel and scroll inside it to see more; the Close button stays visible.
A dashed underline marks unavailable parsing; a double underline marks an unavailable dictionary entry. We do not fill these gaps with guesses. Dictionary definitions offer possible meanings; context determines the meaning in the passage. Our Greek text and its Romanization remain unchanged.

He said, “The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.
Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

So practice and keep everything they tell you to observe, but do not imitate what they do. They say one thing and do another.
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
Δεσμεύουσιν γὰρ φορτία βαρέα καὶ δυσβάστακτα, καὶ ἐπιτιθέασιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους τῶν ἀνθρώπων, τῷ δὲ δακτύλῳ αὐτῶν οὐ θέλουσιν κινῆσαι αὐτά.

“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees—hypocrites! You consume widows’ households while making long prayers as a religious show. Because of this, you will receive even greater judgment.
¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Οὐαὶ δὲ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι, ὑποκριταί, ὅτι κατεσθίετε τὰς οἰκίας τῶν χηρῶν, καὶ προφάσει μακρὰ προσευχόμενοι∙ διὰ τοῦτο λήψεσθε περισσότερον κρίμα.

How terrible it will be for you, blind guides! You say, ‘If someone swears by the temple, it means nothing. But if someone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’
Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, ὁδηγοὶ τυφλοί, οἱ λέγοντες, Ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ ναῷ, οὐδέν ἐστιν∙ ὃς δ’ ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ χρυσῷ τοῦ ναοῦ, ὀφείλει.
Ouai hymin, hodēgoi typhloi, hoi legontes, Hos an omosē en tō naō, ouden estin; hos d’ an omosē en tō chrysō tou naou, opheilei.
Fools and blind men! Which is greater—the gold, or the temple that makes the gold holy?
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

You also say, ‘If someone swears by the altar, it means nothing. But if someone swears by the gift on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’
And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
Καί, Ὃς ἐὰν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ, οὐδέν ἐστιν∙ ὃς δ’ ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ δώρῳ τῷ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ, ὀφείλει.

Therefore, whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything placed upon it.
Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
